Following a pre-defined Demonstration Plan, the NEXES Campaigns of Demonstration demonstrate and validate the NEXES System and Apps in multiple emergency management centres across 9 EU Member States and Turkey, thus involving a large end-users community (PSAPs, EROs, FRs and citizens, including those experiencing disabilities or special needs). The NEXES Campaigns occur in well-controlled environments and test the simultaneous use of voice, data, video and real-time text communications using 112 over the Internet.
The NEXES Demonstration Plan addresses the several demonstration activities in the Action, detailing scenarios, involved parties, key performance indicators and particular objectives, as well as methodologies. The Plan specifies the Campaigns’ specific intent, the language and nature of the various demonstration activities to be conducted, the roles and responsibilities of the various contributing entities, the (high-level) conceptual model and the associated KPIs. These aspects serve as the avenues of knowledge building and ensure that findings and their interpretation are continually brought together to ensure knowledge development (across exercises and pilots campaigns). Each activity of the NEXES Campaigns of Demonstration is designed, presenting the definition of the exercise/pilot scenario, test case and data to be collected; the exercise or pilot planning, including activities and roles of partners; the preparation of the exercise/pilot environment and the instructions for end-users (PSAP operators, FRs, citizens); the conduct of the exercise/pilot in realistic operational conditions and the collection of data for analysis, using surveys and feedback forms; and the production of an Exercise/Pilot Results Report.
NEXES Exercises seek pan-European validation for NEXES, to be conducted in Belgium, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey and the UK.
NEXES Pilots comprise the execution of field experiments and demonstration activities where conditions simulate/mimic true operations but occur under controlled operational environments so that real ES’ response is shielded from any perturbation. Using only simulated data, NEXES Pilots actively involve the NEXES End-users Community (PSAPs, EROs, FRs and citizens, including those experiencing disabilities and special needs). The following Pilots are planned in NEXES:
- The First Pilot will be conducted in Slovenia where novel communication capabilities (e.g., 112 data call services via the pan-EU 112 smartphone Apps) and rich data exchange (extended MSD with personal data, location and pictures) are demonstrated in next generation PSAPs consoles. This pilot will also demonstrate integration with EROs and FRs systems.
- The Second Pilot will be conducted in Romania where smartphone and tablet Apps with TC capabilities and rich data exchange (extended MSD with personal data, location and pictures) over LTE and IMS reach next generation PSAPs consoles. This pilot will also demonstrate multiple call capability and integration with EROs and FRs systems.
- The Ultimate Pilot will be conducted in Turkey where the concept of a next generation virtual (pan-European) PSAP will be demonstrated. Multiple emergency calls (voice, RTT and/or video with extended MSD) will be initiated via Internet and smart routing mechanisms will forward the calls to appropriate PSAPs (located in Finland, Romania, Slovenia, Turkey) based on location, language and multimedia support. This pilot will also involve national and international EROs. The figure presents a preliminary illustration for this pilot:
